Eldorado Canyon

Fixed Hardware

Frequently Asked Questions:

How do I apply to add new fixed hardware?

Simply fill out this application (over) and send it to the Park by April 21 (first review period) or August 21 (second review period).

How do I apply to replace fixed hardware?

If you wish to replace like gear for like gear (e.g. a bolt for a bolt) in the same location, submit this application (over) directly to the Park and the Park can give you a permit if they feel your request is appropriate. If you wish to add fixed hardware to an existing route, switch gear (e.g. replace a piton with a bolt), and/or relocate the gear, submit this application to the Park for public comments through the FHRC process.

When will I know if my request to install new or replacement gear has been approved?

For applications that do not require public review (i.e. like gear for like gear), you will be notified within 3 weeks. Some requests, like replacing an old bolt, may be handled very quickly.

For applications that require public review (i.e. to add or change fixed hardware): ACE and the FHRC will actively seek input from the local climbing community regarding your application. Public meetings will be held twice a year to discuss all new proposals – these meetings will be on the 3rd Wednesday of June and the 3rd Wednesday of October. Time and meeting location to be announced. If your proposal is rejected, you will be notified at the public meeting or by mail within 2 weeks. If your proposal is recommended for approval, ACE will notify the Park within 2 weeks. The Park then has up to 3 weeks to review environmental or other concerns with your application and notify you with their final decision. Every effort will be made by both ACE and the Park to process your application quickly, possibly within a week of the public meeting.

If my proposal is approved, what do I do next?

The Park will mail you a permit or you can arrange to pick it up at the Park’s Visitor Center. The permit must be obtained before you install the gear. The permit expires 6 months from the date of issue.

How is the climbing community informed of my proposal?

Your narrative and your topo will be publicized at the Park’s Visitor Center, local climbing shops, local climbing gyms, and via the Internet. Accompanying your description, the FHRC members will also present a short discussion about the merits and possible problems of the route. This effort is made to present a nonbiased appraisal of your route to the local climbers.

How can I offer my opinions on the merit of any new proposed fixed hardware application?

The best way is to attend the public meetings. If you are unable to attend, Public Comment Questionnaires will be available at the local climbing stores, gyms, and the Visitor Center. ACE also welcomes your comments by email.
