The Formula Rappel Anchor Application

The following information was received from the applicant.

I am proposing to add a double bolt anchor at the top of the Formula.
The anchor is needed because: Currently the anchor is comprised of two small trees approx. 3-4 in diameter. Rappelling, lowering, and top-roping off of these trees is dangerous for both climbers and the trees.

The proposed anchor would be below the trees (which are on a slab); to enhance the pull of the rope and limit the rope wear and abrasion that now occurs. The bolts will be a minimum of 3/8" x 3.5", equalized, placed in vertical alignment, and the hangars will be camouflaged.

The height of the rappel is less than 70', so a 60 meter rope would be sufficient for the rap.

Overview

The current belay station at the top of the Formula utilizes two small trees on a loose ledge system approximately 65 ft above the base. The trees are very close together in proximity and are approximately 3 inch and 4 inches in diameter. These trees are used for belaying, rappelling and top-roping. There is no fixed protection or solid gear placements nearby to back up or avoid using these natural anchors

Does the proposed anchor replace a tree anchor?
Yes, the tree at this location is used as a belay/ top-rope anchor (see above).
Does the proposed anchor replace an unsightly wad of webbing?
Yes, at present (May 2005) the tree has several slings around it.
Is the proposed anchor in the middle of a pitch?
No, the anchor is at the end of the pitch. The proposed anchor is located about 4 feet below and right of the base of the trees at the end of the pitch.
How long is the proposed rappel?
The rappel is approximately 65 feet to the routes base?
